TORONTO – Businessman and philanthropist Joseph Rotman died Tuesday at the age of 80.

Mayor John Tory first announced Rotman’s death on 广州蒲友:

Rotman was born in Toronto Jan. 6, 1935 and went on to work at a number of oil companies, as well as real-estate and venture capital companies.

Prime Minsiter Stephen Harper offered his condolences on behalf of all Canadians to Mr. Rotman’s family.

“Joe was a remarkable Canadian who leaves an impressive legacy in the fields of life sciences, arts and business, including the students who will graduate from the schools that bear his name. Canadians mourn his passing and will remember his many achievements,” Harper said.

Rotman was also a noted philanthropist, and two branches of Ontario universities are named after him: one at the University of Toronto, and the other at Western University where he served as chancellor since 2012.

Minister of Health Eric Hoskins wrote on 广州蒲友 that Rotman was a “friend and mentor” to him:

More to come.
